Stop asking for budget. Frame your product's price against the total cost of alternatives like doing nothing, doing it themselves, or competitors, focusing on hidden costs and lost opportunities. This reframes your solution as an investment
Framing Price Against Alternatives: Not What They Can Afford
Sales people love to ask, "What's your budget?" It's a lazy question, and it's killing your deals. Stop anchoring your price to what a prospect thinks they can afford, or worse, what some spreadsheet dictates. Real closers frame price against the true cost of alternatives. This isn't about manipulation; it's about exposing the hidden expenses and missed opportunities of doing nothing, doing it themselves, or going with the 'cheaper' option.
Your job isn't to be the cheapest. Your job is to be the best value when all costs - tangible and intangible - are considered. You've got to educate your prospect on these costs. If you're constantly hearing "it's too expensive," you haven't framed your value correctly.
The Real Cost of Doing Nothing
Quick pause. If any of this is landing, the fastest way to actually run these plays is a 10-minute call with a Fat Wallet Sales operator. No pitch. No obligation.
Most prospects don't have a "budget" for a solution they don't fully understand or badly need. What they do have is a current state, and that current state has costs. These aren't always line items on a P&L. Think lost revenue, wasted time, employee turnover, missed market opportunities, compliance risks, or reputational damage. These are the silent killers of profit, and they're eating your prospect's wallet right now.
Your product or service isn't just an expense; it's a way to stop the bleeding. Quantify that bleed. If their current process is costing them $10,000 a month in inefficiencies, and your solution costs $5,000, selling it as "only $5,000" is weak. Frame it as "stopping a $10,000/month leak, for an investment of $5,000." Suddenly, your solution isn't adding a cost; it's creating a $5,000 profit center.
This takes digging. You need to ask tough questions that make them uncomfortable enough to articulate their current pain. "What happens if this problem isn't fixed in 6 months?" "What's the lost revenue from X?" "How much team time is wasted on Y?" Don't let them off the hook with vague answers. Get numbers.
